The title ‘surgeon’ is not protected
In the UK, any doctor can legally call themselves a ‘cosmetic surgeon’ — the title is not protected by law. That places the responsibility on you to verify training and credentials. The good news is that the checks are straightforward.
The essential checks
Confirm specialist registration
Check the surgeon is on the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery (or is an appropriately trained ENT/facial plastic surgeon for facial work).
Check professional membership
Membership of BAAPS or BAPRAS indicates recognised training and standards.
Verify the hospital
Confirm the facility is registered with the CQC (or the equivalent regulator in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland).
Review their facelift experience
Ask how often they perform facelifts, see their own before-and-after photos, and ask which technique they recommend for you and why.
Meet the surgeon, not just an adviser
You should consult with the person who will operate, feel unhurried, and never be pressured to book.
If a surgeon is on the GMC Specialist Register, is a BAAPS/BAPRAS member, operates in a CQC-regulated hospital and shows you their own results, you have covered the essentials most patients miss.
