How facelift scars are placed and how to help them fade.
Where the scars are
Facelift incisions are designed to hide in natural boundaries: in the crease in front of the ear, around the earlobe, behind the ear and into the hairline. When well placed and well healed, they are typically very discreet. See scarring and the hairline for what can go wrong and how good technique avoids it.
Helping them fade
Scars are pink and firm at first and soften and fade over up to a year. Helpful measures include keeping them clean, strict sun protection, and — once healed — silicone gels or sheets and gentle massage if your surgeon advises. Avoid smoking, which impairs healing.
