Finance & Surgery Abroad
Payment options and the real risks of surgery overseas.
Paying for surgery
Many clinics offer medical finance to spread the cost. Treat it like any credit agreement: check the interest rate, total repayable and terms, and never let the availability of finance pressure you into a decision or an unsuitable surgeon.
Surgery abroad
Lower prices overseas are tempting, but carry real, specific risks:
With surgery abroad, aftercare and complication management are harder once you return home, UK regulators (GMC, CQC) do not oversee the care, redress is difficult if something goes wrong, and flying soon after surgery raises clot risk. If a complication develops at home, your own NHS or surgeon may have to manage problems they did not create. Weigh the saving against these risks very carefully.
