Swelling & Bruising
What is normal, what helps, and when it settles.
What is normal
Swelling and bruising are universal after a facelift and peak in the first two to three days before steadily improving. Bruising may track downward into the neck under gravity. Numbness and a tight, firm feeling are also normal as nerves and tissues recover.
What helps
Keeping your head elevated, gentle movement, following your surgeon’s instructions and avoiding strenuous activity all help. Arnica and similar remedies are popular though evidence is limited; ask your surgeon.
When to call your surgeon
⚠ Important
Sudden, marked swelling on one side — especially with increasing pain — can indicate a haematoma and needs urgent assessment. Fever, spreading redness or discharge can signal infection. Always contact your surgical team if worried.
